Alfred Farrugia

A.Mus.L.C.M., L.Mus.L.C.M.

Alfred Farrugia is a prolific composer and conductor specializing in wind band repertoire. Born on the 7th of July 1960 in a highly musical family from Żurrieq, he started studying music at a very young age with his father John. In 1973, Alfred joined the Queen Victoria Band Club of the same town as an Althorn player, and in 1976, he switched to the Euphonium, soon taking the responsibility of section principal. Focusing further on his musical skills, Alfred passed with flying colours a self-taught A.B.R.S.M. Grade 8 Euphonium Practical Studies examination, and in 1981, he also joined the AFM Band under the direction of Capt. Anthony Chircop.
Alfred continued his musical theory studies with the renowned Carmelo Pace, and under his tuition he achieved the A.Mus.L.C.M. Diploma in 1982. In the same year he was also appointed as assistant conductor and music teacher of the Queen Victoria Band. Later, continuing his theory studies with Ronnie Debattista, he obtained the L.Mus.L.C.M. Diploma in 1993.
Since 1991, Alfred had been appointed as conductor of the Queen Victoria Band (Żurrieq), St. Joseph Band (Kirkop) and Għaqda Mużikali Maria Bambina Banda Vittoria (Naxxar). Investing his compositional skills in windband music literature, his oeuvre includes a staggering variety of original compositions and arrangements catering for different ensembles. In 2014, he enrolled as a full-time music teacher in Government Middle Schools, and on the 1st of June 2016, he was awarded ‘Ġieħ iż-Żurrieq’ from the Żurrieq Local Council, for his exceptional dedication to music teaching!
